A stretch to call this a race report. Maybe a workout report? There comes a point when one begins to question the value of writing a race report because so much time has passed since the event. I’m trying to avoid that here (barely) with this brief sharing of thoughts as related to the event last Saturday. Although this race has a well-deserved reputation as a tough course, I have to admit it seemed almost easy. Even with the approximately 2000 feet of elevation gain and several miles of technical singletrack. I suppose there’s nothing like a brutal 40 miler one month prior to really re-set your norms. Yes, I know what some of you hardened ultrarunner nutso’s are thinking – and no, I don’t agree that if 40 miles is good that 50-100 is better. You just go on with your bad selves while I stick with distances under 40 miles. Back to the marathon… I was asked how I recover from big efforts such as the one I did 8 days ago. More specifically, is there anything I do to speed my readiness to resume serious training. Call me crazy all you want or turn your nose up in derision, but this event was never intended to be the “gateway drug” to longer, more ridiculous events. It was a check-the-box one-and-done kind of thing. So now that I’ve done it, guess what? My opinion on those matters remain the same. I’ve done it once. Check. So you’re wondering how did it all go? Lucky you, this is a race report, so you shall find out. One of the things I learned from my reconnaissance to Uwharrie a few weeks ago was that I was quite underprepared in my steep uphill hiking fitness. You’d think running up hills would be adequate, but Uwharrie is different from my local terrain in that it is littered with longer, steeper climbs. When you’re going 40 miles, this means hiking them if you aren’t a mountain goatesque freak of nature. This training race kind of snuck up on me. Before I knew it, I had to get up early and go push myself for 10 miles on snowy singletrack. Uh oh. Continue reading Race Report – Little River 10 Mile Trail Run OK, I know this is a little late and this is actually two workouts, not just one. The Uwharrie Recon occurred on 12/29/10 and the Carrboro 50k was on 1/2/11. Both are key events in my preparation for the Uwharrie 40 and are close in calendar proximity, so they both deserve a mention. Here’s another workout of the week. I know! Weekly, even. The Brendan run is much like the Dan G run. The Bill and Andy run is fairly similar, but on average a little slower. So what is this run about and why do I bother sharing it as a workout of the week? |
