White Lake Half II 2010

I know this is long overdue, but I’ve had other stuff on my mind.  The short story is a combined set of lessons.  First,  that one should never not try their bestest when in a race.  So I tried my bestest.  Second, there’s only so much an almost 40 yo can expect off of less than ideal training volume and 3 races over 4 weeks.  So then I blew up.  If you’re still interested, a little more detail follows.

2010 Duathlon Nationals

I always find April to be awfully early to perform at a National Championship worthy level, but that’s when they have it.  All I can do is go do what I can with what fitness I’ve scrounged up so far and try and pick up another national title (if the stars align).

Belews Lake Triathlon – Race Report

Belews Lake is a nice venue and the weather couldn’t have been more pleasant.   A good day to blow the rust out and see what I have in the tank this April.   The lake is warmed by a power plant and has clearer water than you’ll find in any lake except for White Lake.  The water was 71 degrees!

Tobacco Trail Half Marathon Race Report

I think if I had run a half marathon in January or early February, I would have been faster, but as things played out, I arrived at the start line in better swim shape and poorer run shape than I would have figured those short few months ago.  Since my biggest goals of the season are a couple of late-summer triathlons, that may be just as well.

Latest Goings On

Training, work, Remy stuff– things are happening, but how would you know if I don ‘t bother to write them down?  So here I’ll write them down.

Charlotte Duathlon (Whine) Report

After Winston Salem Duathlon was cancelled due to snow, I switched my registration over to Charlotte Duathlon which, as a late February race, had just as much likelihood as weather crappiness as any other winter duathlon around here.  Fortunately, the sun was shining, the wind wasn’t all that strong and the temperatures were above freezing by the time we started.

Valentine’s Day Massacre Relay

My legs hurt bad, especially my calves.  It’s so interesting to discover the different muscles that get sore from faster running versus just lots of running on trails, roads and snow.  For me, it’s my calves, which I said already, but how about I tell you more about this faster running business and quixotic post title?

2010 Racing Schedule

In general, my racing goals include doing the five races to qualify for the NCTS series category awards in addition to three age group national championships.  Since two of these national championships only require crossing one state line, this keeps travel in check, which is also a priority of mine.  So, no, I’m not getting a pro card, since people keep asking that.  I’d rather leverage my new (40!) age group using a similar (lower volume) training approach as I did this past year.  And not have a lots of long trips to contend with.  Besides, I’m really not all that fast any way.
