All Stats Are Good

Today was this month’s birthing center visit and besides the usual stuff, we did the diabetes screen and re-checked the hematocrit. The glucose drink was a gross-looking bottle of bright-orange colored and “flavored” sugar water with preservatives and zero heath benefit. I worried about how gross it would be, but truthfully, it tasted just like flat orange Fanta. What’s strange about that realization is that I haven’t drunk Fanta in a really, really long time, so I found myself amazed by the strength of that flashback to a beverage occasionally consumed in my childhood. Fanta, yes, that definitely tastes like Fanta. No doubt about it. Fortunately, I was allowed to eat my normal breakfast, but just not allowed to eat or drink anything after consuming the flat soda crap until my blood was drawn. I kept finding myself wanting to reach for my water bottle, but no, can’t have that, not yet.

My hematocrit came out at 11.5, which the midwives claimed as normal for pregnancy. Really, normal for me not pregnant, I corrected, because I tend to have hematocrit measurements on the low side of normal for as long as I remember. Blood pressure was right where it normally is and weight is up 4 1/2 pounds, for about an average gain of 1 lb per week. The little guy has a nice, solid heartrate of 155 bpm. Everything is normal, normal, normal. To which I say good, good, good.

Later, The Crumpler and I went back to the quarry for a swim. I putzed back and forth for about 30 minutes while he tried out this stealthy combat side stroke that he found online. Apparently, it’s more complicated than the way it looks on video, he says. I stuck mostly with freestyle, with a few quarry crossings of breastroke and a short bit of backstroke and butterfly so I could say I did it. I’m not really in butterfly shape. Heck, I’m not in great swimming shape, but I can still get around a body of water OK. We had fun.
