Where to start? No idea. I’ll just do my best to type out an update about all the goings on in my life.
This focus on education has made me quite busy. Busy with low paying gigs. Busy with volunteer gigs. Hard to keep up with the Mommy gig.
Happily, also the occasional well paying recruiting assignment. Not so happily, the more frequent than desired recruiting assignment put on hold. Contingent compensation can sometimes equal time lost forever. Time I could have been playing the Mommy gig.
Or playing the training gig. I have triathlons on the horizon, sez this late season starter. Yes, my first one is in late May. I’ve resumed swimming after 6 months off. That was about a month ago. Since then I’ve averaged one swim per week. Stellar. Run volume, as expected, has dropped well off the map. I am trying to insert greater intensity in it’s place. Cycling volume varies week to week. This past week has been good. In fact, I have a 5k to run tomorrow. We’ll see how it goes!
So, anyway, last Tuesday I took the GRE. I was targeting some high scores, which was a bit anxiety inducing. Fortunately, all of the preparation paid off and I scored some high scores. Now, if I so choose to apply to the Duke Public Policy program, I have a long shot of getting in assuming I do everything else perfectly right. I’m not sure what the standards are at NC State for their Educational Policy program, but they can’t possibly be higher than at Duke.
Speaking of applying to doctoral programs, this might get put on hold. Why? Well, something’s come up that might allow me to get the financial house is order before forcing the family to subsist on a paltry doctoral stipend. The economy hasn’t been great for HR consulting these past few years. So what is this mysterious thing? I’ll share more next week when I have more news, but I will highlight how critical it is to have a good network.
A surprising amount of work I have gotten is connected either loosely or quite closely to people I know through endurance sport. I may not be the ultra hob-nobber on the business after hours scene, but I like hanging with the sporty peeps. Sporty peeps that happen to be smart, influential and impressionable enough to think I don’t suck.
Well, I guess that’s it for now. The idea well just ran dry. I’ll try and get a race report up for the 5k run without too much delay.
