Should I Offer Triathlon Coaching?

I get asked about this all the time.  My usual response is naaahhh…I don’t really want to be writing workouts all the time for other people and, besides, aren’t there a million thousand other people who do this already?  Just locally- never mind nationwide?  And are friends of mine?  Is there really enough demand for yet another tri coach around here?

So I say this but am faced with two big reasons why I’m thinking about changing my tune.

Reason 1. I enjoy it and have credibility and expertise.

I recognize that I have managed to acquire quite a bit of knowledge and expertise over the past 8 years and I enjoy sharing it.  Even though I wouldn’t want to spend the bulk of my days writing workouts, I do find myself offering advice (solicited and sometimes unsolicited) about training techniques and strategy.  If someone would like to receive regular advice and counsel on a topic that I know well and enjoy, why not be fairly compensated for the service?

Speaking of compensation…

Reason 2. I could use some additional cash flow.

The thing with consulting (I’m a self-employed consultant) is that you have flush years and lean years.  Lately, I’ve been having lean years.  Outside of subsisting totally on beans and rice in a non air-conditioned home (no WAY), there’s not a lot more we can cut from the expenses.  Raleigh Running Outfitters keeps me racing, so that’s how I accomodate that cost.

Now, I don’t really care to set up a detailed coaching process and price schedule.  Nor am I, as inferred in the intro, looking to compete head to head with my coaching friends out there.  So here is what I propose. If you are interested in receiving some level of triathlon/multisport/non-sport advise, counsel and/or coaching from me, contact me with the following:

  1. The scope of what you’d like to receive.
  2. The price you feel is reasonable.

Then we’ll come to some agreement and go from there.

P.S.  I won’t be offended if no one takes me up on this.  Like I said, I don’t even know that there’s untapped demand out there.

P.P.S.  Yes, I know this isn’t exactly a high-powered, effective sales pitch or anything close.  This is just me talking and offering.
