As of today, I’ve hung the shingle out to provide performance mentoring. Different than triathlon coaching, performance mentoring is about consistently high levels of personal performance across any life domain. Through PerforMentor, I can help you optimize your personal performance by leveraging your natural strengths and interests, creating a stable platform for success, and learning the skills to effectively transition and transform yourself.
What is Performance Mentoring?
There is coaching, training and mentoring and each of these is a variant of approaches to enhance performance. This could be considered a matter of semantics and these categories overlap quite a bit, but the discussion is helpful in clarifying what I’m offering.
Coaching is guidance in doing what you already do better to optimize the capacity you have in a particular activity or job role. Sport coaches guide teams and individuals in improving their performance in their sport of choice. Business coaches guide professionals in improving their performance in their current position. A manager can coach his/her direct reports on improving their current job performance.
Training is providing technical knowledge and skill development that is intended to improve performance in some way and is often used as part of a coaching program. Many coaches also train, although some high-profile athletic team coaches have skill-area specific trainers, such as batting coaches or strength trainers. The same occurs in business where a manager may train an employee on certain skills but often has the employee get trained by a subject matter expert or training professional.
Mentoring is guidance in transitioning your capacity to new levels by helping you ready yourself for the transition and by assisting with the transition process itself. This is most often seen in a business setting where your boss’s boss or other executive at a similar level mentors you into a role the next level up.
In general, training achieves short term developmental targets, coaching achieves mid-term developmental targets and mentoring achieves long term developmental targets. Training is nested into any coaching program, as coaching AND training are nested into any mentoring program.
Performance Mentoring would then be the process of guiding you to consistent high performance in any domain by training you in the skill of skill development and coaching you through obstacles on your transitional and transformational path. Whether you are seeking to re-make yourself or make yourself better, performance mentoring helps you get there and teaches you how to get there more effectively.
