14 Months

I’m  not sure when you are supposed to switch from counting months to counting years and half years, but I think it’s somewhere between 18 months (1.5 years for the math challenged) and 2 years.  We aren’t there yet, so here’s the 14 month report if I can think straight with the big man playing crash symbols with metal pot and pan lids.

Sidewalk Chalk Artiste - We have a black rubber mat on the back porch that I put under my bike to catch my sweat puddle when I ride on the trainer.  It turns out that it’s a fantastic chalk board.  There are a few rules in Remy’s world of artwork:  (1) Chalk works better with teeth marks in it, (2) All of the colors must be dumped out of the container before starting, and (3) It’s OK to eat the chalk once it’s small enough to chew.

Speaking of Teeth – We have 4 coming in slooowly on the top for the past month or so and one more on the bottom.  We seem to be having intermittent symptoms that suggest molar teething, but there’s no sign of them breaking through yet.  He may be a big boy in size, but he’s slow on the curve with teeth sprouting.

Crazy Noises – This isn’t new, but I’m starting to notice where he’s getting them from.  There’s no way to spell the sounds he makes, but suffice it to say that the typical person would identify such noises as “all boy.”  However, I’m pretty sure a lot of them started by imitating me, then we encourage it by laughing and imitating him.  It’s a vicious circle.

Having Something to Say – Beyond the crazy noises, he has an impressive repertoire of inflections used in saying “aah”, usually while pointing at something or someone.  He can carry on extensive conversations using only “ah” and random noises.   He’s capable of whiney Ma Ma Ma’s when he wants something and Uh Oh’s when he’s in the process of “accidentally” dropping something, but he doesn’t seem interested in building up his spoken vocabulary.  Baby signs seem limited to those that get him something he wants (All Done, Milk, Food, etc.) and sees little need for signs that simply label things.  Thus far.

Understanding Mom and Dad – He may not use many words, but boy does he understand them when Mom and Dad say them.  Oh yes he understands a lot and likely even more than I realize.  For example, I ask him to go get my brush and off he goes into the cabinet (with the worthless baby lock on it) and retrieves two brushes and hands me one while “using” the other.  Despite his small number of spoken words, I am confident that his language skills are developing just fine.

Dancing Guy – Those of you on Facebook know this already and have seen the video.  Those non-FBers, well, Remy knows how to get down.  He also like to spin around in circles.   The past couple days he’s added the run in place happy dance.   Gary says that three moves is all you need.  We’ll see about that.

Throwing the Ball – He’s getting better control with practice.  I’m pleased to see that he might get his throwing arm from his Dad, instead of his Mom.  I throw like a girl.

He Just Keeps Growing – Imagine that.  The 18 month clothes are getting shorter and tighter and the 24 month / 2T stuff is fitting more as it should instead of baggy.  Thankfully, Remy has grandparents that work in a thrift store and provide him with new gear on a regular basis.  If Raleigh Running Outfitters had his size, I’d buy there.  Soon enough…

Yes, We’re Still Nursing – No end in sight, especially for the night hours.  I’m fine with that, although there are times when my body parts don’t seem to belong to me.  Last night, for example.

I’m sure there are other things to report on, but I can’t think of them right now and have other things to do.

You definitely have yourself a boy alright! I often tell Tim that had Brayden come first, we would have waited much longer for a second one.

What’s up with the spinning? Brayden is doing that too. Ryan just tries to push him once he stops to see if he’ll fall.

We also do the happy dance! It’s one of my favorites. And I agree, they understand A LOT. Zach will point and grunt at stuff and as soon as I guess what he wants like “Do you want to talk on the telephone?” he smiles real big and does the happy dance.

And you are a trooper for still nursing. That’s amazing.
