If The Shoe Fits

Size five.  That’s what size foot Remy has now.  We know because I decided what with all this short-distance toddling and cruising going on, we might want to start using shoes for the outdoor adventures.   He’s bopping around on things harder than clover and sand– yes, he’s adventuring into wood chips and gravel.

The other week, I looked at my sleeping babe and thought, dang that kids feet look bigger today.  Later that same day, Gary said, gee Remy’s feet look bigger.  Do baby feet grow a size overnight?  The previous pair of size 3 Croc-looking knock off’s were cuter than they were functional.  They fit him not THAT long ago, but now I couldn’t get them over his toes.

We were at the mall (egad) for another reason and found a baby shop with shoes on sale, so we bought them.  I don’t know how long they’ll fit, because they don’t have any room for more growth.  We’ll see

The first time we tried them, he found them disorienting.  He kept raising his feet extra high because he couldn’t feel his foot leaving contact with the ground.  The second time went better.  Then I took the opportunity to take some pictures of the happy guy who seems to have napped away the worst of his cold.  Lucky guy.

They won’t last long sadly. Brayden is already moving into a size 7 after only having the size sixes since 12 months…a new pair of shoes every 2 months does not sit well with the bank account. Do they still make jellies? Those things were nice for a budget! haha.

it’s almost sad when they start wearing shoes, like something so natural is taken away from them! and then…. they outgrow them so darn quick! But I still ahve all Luc’s baby shoes!

  • Mary, I did feel sad about putting his perfect, wonderfully formed feet into those horrible manmade rubber things, especially when he was struggling with them the first try. I wondered what I was doing to my baby. Then I reminded myself that we wear shoes in this society, so this is something he needs to learn sooner or later. I promised myself that indoors remains a shoe free zone for the Remster.

Angela, It looks like croc-type knock off’s are more common than jellies these days. The ones we found were on sale for $6, so not too bad. Much cheaper than the fancy leather things we saw at Baby Gap.

That is funny that you asked if baby’s feet grow a size overnight. Elena just grew out of her size 6 and it seemed to happen so fast. I like to go barefoot a lot and so I let Elena go barefoot when it is appropriate to our society’s norms. We like to go for walks on our sidewalk without shoes and our neighbors think we are weird and always comment on it.

  • Angeline is still shoeless. I bought her first pair last week. I’m convinced she wouldn’t have been walking at 9 months if we enforced those contraptions earlier on. Ugh.

She sat down, and cried and kicked and pulled until she figured out how to get them off, stood up and started running.

I’m honestly not too concerned because I didn’t wear shoes outside of school until I was a teenager, even outside, and I turned out okay. Though I know at some point by winter I’ll need them because she wants to walk everywhere herself and even in GA it gets cold.
