Always Check The Weather

It was foolish on my part, but I don’t think I looked at the weather forecast since last Thursday. From that vantage point, it looked to be a hot, rain-free weekend. Good for getting some commuting to the store riding in, which is what we planned to do today.

After a morning of painting the purple parts of the octopus, I reached a stopping point and geared up for our trip to Whole Foods in downtown Durham. It’s a 6+ mile commute mostly on bike-ped trails that we’ve done a couple times already. We’re about a quarter mile from the house and see dark clouds collecting in one part of the sky. Do we head back and check the weather first? Nah…says Gary, we’ll be fine.

Which we were, until the sky fell about 2 miles later. Crap. There we are on top of a hill getting poured on. We take partial shelter under some trees (always good to be on top of a hill under trees in a thunderstorm). I peer down the trail in the direction towards downtown and it doesn’t look forebodingly dark, but it looks really rainy. Big drops plopping down steaming off the pavement.

After a few minutes of indecision, it eases up a bit and we head back down the hill towards home. No sense in taking our soaking wet selves into an air-conditioned store with no guarantee that the rain is going to cease anytime soon. Of course, heading home, the rain is stopped by the time we get there. It turns out there’s a really good chance of further storms this afternoon and evening. Oh well…I guess we’ll go to Whole Foods tomorrow. Weather looks good tomorrow. We’ll (gasp) drive over to Michael’s and get some more paint in the needed colors. Even though it’s not raining now, I’m a little hesitant to tempt the weather gods again today.

So, anyway, because it’s time for another belly picture, here I am right before our ill-fated ride. I’m at 34 1/2 weeks. They are blurry probably because I don’t sit still enough for longer-exposure shots.

  • Yep, the weather gods were conspiring against you. Weather.com can be a good asset… although the way the storms pop up suddenly in the South, you don’t always know when or where they’ll turn up next. Cute belly pics! You’re looking great!
