Goodbye Speed

As my run pace slows weekly (it seems), I am wondering if I’ve seen the last of sub-8 minute miles for a while.  I’ve been reading the Exercising Through Pregnancy book and it mentions increased blood volume in late first trimester can result in some impressive performances.  I don’t know what Dr. Clapp’s talking about.  I’m only 6 1/2 weeks along and already I’m adding 10-20 seconds per mile at similar efforts.  It doesn’t concern me, because I’m not exactly gearing up for any races.  I mean, racing?  I don’t have the desire even if I did have the speed to back it up.  Yikes.

Maybe I’ll magically get a little faster later in the process.  Or maybe not.  I guess everybody’s a little different.  I should just count my lucky stars that I’m not constantly puking or anything.  I hear of women going through that and ending up with weight loss instead of gain in the first trimester, but that sounds like a big price to pay for a few pounds that will just come off eventually.

I had a nice run today– 7.8 miles in a little over an hour.  Nice and relaxed.  Now I’m enjoying some warm ginger tea.  The ginger, by the way, may actually help.  I had a couple of ginger ale’s and some ginger crystal candies yesterday and didn’t have hardly any queasiness at all, which may be a spurious co-occurance, but I’ll keep testing it out and see what happens.

  • Holy crap Alicia! I have some catching up to do! I had a hunch you were trying to get preggers (something about “taking the year off from racing” :) but apparently I haven’t been checking in here frequently enough… and apparently you do EVERYTHING quickly! (Swim, bike, run, get pregnant!)
Anyway, this was a very long-winded way of saying CONGRATULATIONS! I can’t wait to follow along during your pregnancy!

  • Bree

I kid you not… I got my best 5k time at 6 months preggo! I felt like junk till about 5 months with REALLY bad all-day-sickness, then all of a sudden I felt like I could run marathons with a basket ball in my belly! You will be a stud with a b-ball in your belly soon enough!
You are doing GREAT! Have fun with your pregnant season in life and take lots of photos! That is the only bummer… I wish I took more… like one at each month to show the growing stages…
    Best to you!!!!

  • Oh, this makes me want to have another baby!!! Of course, I was as slow as molasses…because I was NOT allowed to run or workout after 11 weeks..HAHA! You are doing great, Alicia – have fun and I promise the speed will come back. I ate so many Entemmen (sp?) donuts that I tried not to throw up every day early on. HAHA…oh the memories. :) ) Post some belly pics, please! (well, when you are showing).
