Never underestimate the power of a solid network of people who believe in you. You never know who might be a friend of a friend and what kind of cool stuff they might do that might end up being a beneficial. Even if it’s someone who doesn’t even run, bike or swim (well, obviously, she can do all three of these things, but you know what I mean).
As it turns out, my colleague knows someone who wrote some software for a power meter company called iBike. This power meter that is a bit newer to the market than the well known Powertap, Ergomo and SRM. The scuttlebutt is that there have been some concerns from users that the quality might not be up to par with the big three players in the endurance sport marketplace, but I think that’s a temporary situation.
The Crumpler did some checking into iBike and what we found is a small organization committed to continuous improvement to their product. They actually take feedback from customers and implement it, which can’t be said for every technology company out there. In fact, that’s how my friend of a friend got involved with iBike in the first place. He’s a clever software programmer that looked at his iBike software and said, hmmmm, I’d love it if this software had additional features, then proceeded to program those and tell the iBike people about it. The iBike people loved it and now he’s part of the team.
So he tells this story to my colleague, who proceeds to bend his ear about this elite triathlete she knows (some people are so easily impressed!) that would love to give the unit a try. Which I would. Believe it or not, they went for it and now I am the proud owner of a demo version of the iBike Pro Power Meter. Merry Christmas to me!
Gary is now installing the unit on my road bike where we’ll run it through it’s paces over the coming months. I’ll share with you my experiences learning all the features and how I feel about the utility of the product. Now, training with power is something new to me, so there will be a bit of a learning curve, but I do see the value in it. Check back often to read the latest installment of the iBike Adventures.
