Lessons Learned, or Nice Shoes Dummy.

So it’s 40′s with light rain, and I opt to take my recovery ride to the Umstead bridle trails.  I suit up with my layers and rain jacket.  I reach into my bag o’ gear and I pull out the left cycling shoe.  Wait?  What’s this?  This isn’t the mountain bike shoe!  Arg.  Uh oh– what’s the other shoe I have with me?  It IS a mountain bike shoe and luckily for the right foot.  Nice.

So other than the fact that I didn’t pay attention to what I was doing this morning when I packed the bag, here’s what I learned today:

1.  My cleats are positioned differently on my road and mountain bike shoes.  It was interesting to feel the difference in muscle usage between the positions.  I probably should move the mountain bike shoe cleats up a touch.

2.  Windproof socks don’t do kaka when they’re soaking wet.  My tootsie-sicles prompted me to end the ride when I did instead of extend it a little.

3.  Raindrops in my eyes at 28 mph kind of hurts.

4.  On days like this, if I could find an all uphill course, I would take it.  Downhills were no fun.

Ooh.  This is off topic, but I just learned it watching some track and field coverage.  Super duper awesome distance runner and UNC alum Shalane Flanagan is moving back to North Carolina pretty soon.  Awesome!  Count me as a Shalane fan.

Ooh again.  Speaking of ridiculously talented female athletes, IOS/Triangle Multisport Tri teammate Kristin Price just won the Coach Bubba 20k in a new stupidly fast course record.  Also, other teammate Alisha Lion just blew out the pro women’s field at the Phoenix Classic Duathlon.  She outran and out biked an impressive field of professionals.  I mean, really.  You think I’m fast for my win at po-dunk Du?  You have no idea…  :)
