Fort Davis Trip

I’ve been meaning to write a post about this. This? What this? A training trip this, that’s what. Training trip? What the…I’ve never actually taken a trip to just go train a bunch. Sounds down right crazy!

Alisha was talking about Winter training trips one day and I think, WHO does that? Professional atheletes? Well, she’s a pro cyclist, so there you go.

Then I started thinking. COULD I get away sometime this Winter? If so, when? Aha! The week after Christmas. But where to go? Well, Gary starts investigating places that are south and have mountains. Oh, and not much rain. So, high desert.

Turns out there’s a place like in the remote area of western Texas. Out in the middle of these boonies is a boonieville named Fort Davis. There are mountains (really!) the Davis Mountains and very little rain. It’s cool at night and in the mornings, but up to 60-ish. Yeah, the weather sounds similar to around here, but less chance of rain. And mountains. And miles upon miles of lightly travelled roads.

We found us a place to stay – reasonably priced with a kitchen and even a washer and dryer. Yes– washer and dryer!! Oh, yeah, baby. Running, riding everyday and swimming some too, generates lots of laundry!

Wait– swimming too? Oh, yes. Believe it or not, just 35 miles away from where we’re staying is a spring fed lake at Balmorhea with consistent water temperatures of 72-74 degrees. They do scuba diving there. For real! How cool is that?

We leave the day after Christmas – Tuesday, December 26th. I’ll be posting daily reports, so check in. We’ll get pics too.
