I arrive at Umstead just before 8am to meet some people for a cyclocross ride on the bridle trails. Also arriving is a minivan, SUV and another vehicle of lanky Kenyan runners. There are maybe 20 of them. I know of Elly Rono and maybe a couple of others, but I don’t think that many Kenyan runners live around here. Maybe I was wrong, or maybe this is some sort of training camp situation.
Outside the ladies restroom I paused to chat with one of the women runners. She was very friendly and gave me a hug. I don’t think she knew much English, but she was a cute little thing and had on a Philadelphia Marathon shirt.
Out on our bikes, we caught several views of these amazing runners in full flight. Based on when they started and finished (just before and just after us), they were out there for a couple hours. How many miles? 20? I don’t know. They were flying. They were NOT running those miles easy. It was awesome to watch.
